General description

Milk from dairy cows contains the protein β-lactoglobulin (BLG). It naturally occurs in a number of genetic variants, and the most prevalent bovine variants are BLG A and BLG B.[1]

Application

β-Lactoglobulin was used in a cytologic assay for diagnosis of food hypersensitivity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

A member of the lipocalin family, βLg is a small protein of 162 amino acids with a molecular mass of ∼18,400 Da. It features an eight-stranded β-barrel (strands A-H) succeeded by a three-turn a-helix and a final β-strand (strand I) that forms part of the dimerization interface.[3]

Other Notes

Contains β-lactoglobulins A and B which can be isolated chromatographically.

Quality

May not contain folate binding protein; not recommended for folate analysis.

Preparation Note

Chromatographically purified

Questions

1–6 of 6 Questions
  1. What is the preferred buffer to dilute the product in? Or is it deionized water with or without protease inhibitors? (Application: SDS-PAGE gels and western blot)

    1 answer
    1. This product is not tested for solubility. Various sources suggest that this material may be reconstituted in water or aqueous buffers at 5 mg/ml. This information has not been validated.

      Helpful?

  2. does this product have other components such as sucrose, trehalose or salts?

    1 answer
    1. This product is prepared from skimmed milk. Lactoglobulins are precipitated and further purified chromatographically. The final dialysis process depletes most residual salts. The minimum purity of this product is 90%. While sugars such as trehalose and sucrose would not be expected, the impurities of this product have not been identified.

  3. How is the solubility of the product in water?

    1 answer
    1. This product is not tested for solubility. Various sources suggest that this material may be reconstituted in water or aqueous buffers at 5 mg/ml. This information has not been validated.

  4. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.

  5. What is the molecular weight of Product L3908, β-Lactoglobulin from bovine milk?

    1 answer
    1. Product L3908, β-Lactoglobulin from bovine milk, exists as a dimer of two peptides. Peptide A = 18,367, B = 18,281; the monomer is approximately 36,600.

      Helpful?

  6. How does the storage temperature relate to shipping conditions?

    1 answer
    1. The storage conditions that a Sigma-Aldrich catalog and label recommend for products are deliberately conservative. For many products, long-term storage at low temperatures will increase the time during which they are expected to remain in specification and therefore are labeled accordingly. Where short-term storage, shipping time frame, or exposure to conditions other than those recommended for long-term storage will not affect product quality, Sigma-Aldrich will ship at ambient temperature. The products sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than their recommended long-term storage are shipped on wet or dry ice. Ambient temperature shipping helps to control shipping costs for our customers. At any time, our customers can request wet- or dry-ice shipment, but the special handling is at customer expense if our product history indicates that the product is stable for regular shipment.
