General description

18-Crown-6 belongs to the class of Crown ethers, a group of macrocyclic polyethers, which have become valuable tools in organic synthesis, since they can solvate alkali, alkaline-earth and transition-metal cations in nonpolar, aprotic solvents. 18-Crown-6 is found to be most suitable for complexing with K+, NH4+ and Rb+ cations.

Application

18-Crown-6 may be used as a complexing agent, along with the mobile phase for the separation of alkali and alkaline earth metal and amine cations and its application for the direct analysis of ammonia from nitrogenase is studied. It may also be used as a complexing agent in the determination of inorganic and organic anions, alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal cations by capillary electrophoresis using contactless conductometric detector.
