Target description

Desmin (UniProt: P02540) is encoded by the DES gene (Gene ID: 396725) in porcine. Desmin is a type III intermediate filament protein that is essential for maintaining the structural and functional integrity of muscle cells as part of the cytoskeletal network. It provides mechanical support to the muscle cells and facilitates the organization of contractile proteins within the cell. Additionally, it is involved in various cellular processes, including cell signaling, maintenance of cell shape, and intracellular transport. It is particularly abundant in cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle tissues. It is also enriched at postsynaptic membranes of neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). Mutations in the gene encoding Desmin have been associated with hereditary and sporadic myopathies, cardiomyopathies and myasthenic syndrome. (Ref.: Eiber, N., et al., (2020). Front. Mol. Neurosci. 13; Article 567084).
