General description

Benzene (C6H6) is an organic compound. It is widely used as a solvent in the production of industrial chemicals (such as cyclohexane, cumene, and styrene), and adhesives. Additionally, several types of rubber, lubricants, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides are made using benzene.

Application

Benzene can be used:
  • As a starting material to produce ethylbenzene with the gaseous ethylene in presence of Friedel-Crafts catalysts (aluminum chloride).
  • As a starting material to produce cumene by catalytic alkylation with propylene.
  • As a reactant in the production of cyclohexane under mild condition using Ru/ carbon nanotubes (CNTs) catalysts by hydrogenation method.
  • To synthesis phenol using H2O2 as an oxygen source and nickel(II)complex as a catalyst by hydroxylation method.
  • As a solvent along with hexafluoro benzene to obtain stabilized graphene sheet.
