Gene Information

human ... UBE2A(7319)

General description

Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 A (EC 6.3.2.19; UniProt P49459; also known as hHR6A, HR6A, RAD6 homolog A, Ubiquitin carrier protein A) is encoded by the UBE2A (also known as MRXS30, MRXSN, RAD6A, UBC2) gene (Gene ID 7319) in human. UBE2A accepts ubiquitin from the E1 complex and catalyzes its covalent attachment to other proteins. UBE2A is involved in transcription regulation by catalyzing the monoubiquitination of histone H2B Lys120 to form H2BK120ub1. H2BK120ub1 serves as a specific signal for epigenetic transcriptional activation, elongation by RNA polymerase II, telomeric silencing, as well as a prerequisite for H3K4me and H3K79me formation. In vitro, UBE2A catalyzes both Lys11 and Lys48-linked polyubiquitination. UBE2A is also involved in UV-damaged DNA repair and aberrant UBE2A can cause mental retardation syndromic X-linked Nascimento-type (MRXSN).

Specificity
