General description

Dolichol is composed of repeated units of isoprenoids and forms a long chain unsaturated molecule. It is known to be widely present in all eukaryotic cells. Dolichol is predominantly synthesised in endoplasmic reticulum and localized to the phospholipid bilayer.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Dolichol influences the process of protein transfer in the endoplasmic reticulum through protein glycosylation. It acts as a lipid carrier of sugars.
