General description

Ceramide is a sphingolipid. It is made up of sphingosine linked to a fatty acid through an amide bond. Ceramide is highly hydrophobic and are present in small amounts within the cell membrane. It is an N-acyl amide derivative of sphingoid bases.[1]

Ceramide is a major secondary messenger, which regulates apoptosis and cell signaling.[2]
