General description

Ceramide is a bioactive sphingolipid. C18 Ceramide (d17:1/18:0) is synthesized by the N-acylation of sphingosine.[1] This reaction is catalyzed by ceramide synthase 1 (CerS1).[2] C18 Ceramide is highly expressed in brain tissues.[1]

Application

C18 Ceramide (d17:1/18:0) has been used as an internal standard in mass spectrometer and ultra high performance Liquid Chromatography for quantitative measurement of ceramides in muscle.[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

C18 Ceramide has an ability to induce cell death.[4] Defects in the generation or accumulation of C18 Ceramide has been associated with the development of human head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC).[2]
