General description

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is an acidic phospholipid, abundantly found in the protein myelin. It is localized to the membranes and present in plasma. PS constitutes 2% to 20% of the total phospholipid mass.[1]

Application

16:0-18:2 PS or 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-L-serine (sodium salt) might be used in the preparation of giant unilamellar liposomes (GULs).[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylserine (PS) supports nerve cell membranes and myelin. It affects the catabolism and anabolism of neurotransmitters acetylcholine (ACh), norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine.[1]

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is the most abundant negatively charged phospholipid in eukaryotic membranes. PS directs the binding of proteins that bear C2 or gamma-carboxyglutamic domains and contributes to the electrostatic association of polycationic ligands with cellular membranes.
