General description

Contains ~40% plasmalogen ether lipid
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a phospholipid, that comprises 40-50% of the total phospholipid content in the cell membrane. It is an abundant phospholipid in all mammalian cells and cellular organelles. PC is a glycerophospholipid. It is synthesized by the Kennedy pathway.

Application

Heart PC has been used in the Mycobacterium lipid extraction and in β- Hexosaminidase release and calcium mobilization assays.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) in the liver is responsible for the production of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL).

Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) of the globo-series constitute specific receptors for Shiga toxins (Stxs) released by certain types of pathogenic Escherichia coli strains. Stx-loaded leukocytes may act as transporter cells in the blood and transfer the toxin to endothelial target cells. Therefore
