General description

Bismuth(III) chloride is an inorganic salt that can be prepared by the reaction of bismuth with chlorine.

Application

Bismuth(III) chloride may be used as a catalyst in the following processes:
  • Alcoholysis, acetolysis and hydrolysis of epoxides to form the corresponding β-alkoxy and β-acetoxy alcohols and diols.
  • Preparation of thiiranes from oxiranes using ammonium thiocyanate.
  • Three component coupling of carbonyl compound, amine and dialkyl phosphite to form α-amino phosphonates.
  • Allylation of secondary benzyl alcohols with allyltrimethylsilane.
  • [4 + 2] cycloaddition between dienes and α-carbonyl ethylenic dienophiles.
