General description

Alginic acid sodium is a gelling and nontoxic anionic polysaccharide. The carboxylic acid groups on the alginic acid chain, renders it insoluble in water. However, converting alginic acid to its sodium form, enables it to solubilize in water easily.[1]

Application

Alginic acid sodium is used:
  • in combination with chitosan, to fabricate a biodegradable porous scaffold for bone tissue engineering.[2]
  • to study the characteristics of a modified amphiphilic alginate derivative[3]
  • to the study the impact of alginate on the rate of lipid digestion by employing an in vitro digestion model[4]
  • in the preparation of alginate hydrogels[5]
  • as encapsulating agents of microparticles of β-galactosidae[6]

Chitosan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide ideally suited for use in medical supplies, devices, therapeutics, and diagnostics. The unique natural characteristics of chitosan include its cationic, biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, non-immunogenic, and antimicrobial properties.

Collagen molecules play a critical role in tissue architecture and strength, and in cell-matrix interactions as insoluble ligands to regulate the diverse phenotypic activities of cells.

Hydrogel-based biomaterials for cell delivery and tissue regeneration applications are discussed.

Questions

1–10 of 15 Questions
  1. Is the solution made with this at a 1-3 % W/V stable if sterilely filtered and frozen or at a certain temperature does it precipitate? How long would a solution last after preparation at 4 degrees or -20 degrees or -80 degrees? No crosslinking as of yet.

    1 answer
    1. Unfortunately, no solution stability info is available for this product. The empirical result indicates that the lower w/v %, the less possibility for precipitation. The stock solution may remain stable at 4 Degrees. Storage at -20 or -80 Degrees is not recommended since phase separation may occur that reduces the stability of the solution.

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. what is the G/M ratio of this product? is G/M>1?

    1 answer
    1. Generally, the G/M ratio is not tested. The approximate amounts are 61% M and 39% G, resulting in an M/G ratio of 1.56. However, since this is not tested for each batch, the value cannot be guaranteed and should be treated as an approximation.

  5. What is the species name of the seaweed from which Product No. 180947 originates?

    1 answer
    1. This product is purified from Phaeophyceae or Brown Algae.

  6. What is the density of alginic acid sodium salt powder 180947

    1 answer
    1. Unfortunately, the density is not determined for this product.

  7. WHAT IS THE PURITY OF THE PRODUCT NO. 180947, ALGINIC ACID SODIUM SALT?

    1 answer
    1. The purity is not analyzed on a lot-to-lot basis. This product is a mixture, not a simple compound. The ratio of mannuronic acid to guluronic acid (M/G ratio) is 1.56.

      Helpful?

  8. What is the structure of Product No. 180947, Alginic acid sodium salt?

    1 answer
    1. Alginic acid is a linear polymer of B-(1-->4)-D-Mannosyluronic acid and a(1-->4)-L-gulosyluronic acid residues, the relative amounts of which vary with the botanical source and the state of maturation of the plant.

      Helpful?

  9. Is it possible to sterilise this powder in EtOH?

    1 answer
    1. Sterilizing this product in ethanol has not been investigated. However, sources state that it possible to disinfect alginate or composite alginate hydrogels in ethanol:
      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8218599/

Alternatively, solutions of Alginic acid may be sterilized by autoclaving prior to the addition of the preferred cation (required for gelation).

  10. Why are the color and viscosity different from the same product purchased before 2022? The product with same product number which was purchased in 2023 has much more bright color and low viscosity. Was the production process changed in 2023?

    1 answer
    1. This product has the appearance specification of faint yellow to light brown. The viscosity of a 1% solution in water has a specification range of 15 - 25 cps. If the product's appearance and viscosity are outside of these ranges further information will be needed. Our Technical Service team can assist you with further troubleshooting and/or investigation.
