Perfluorobutyrate (PFBA) is a short chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylate that is structurally similar to perfluorooctanoate. Administration of PFBA can cause peroxisome proliferation, induction of peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation and hepatomegaly, suggesting that PFBA activates the nuclear receptor, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-alpha).
