General description

Methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) is a macrocyclic compound that can form inclusion complexes with a number of guest molecules. It shows higher solubility in aqueous solutions and greater solubilizing and complexing power compared to the parent β-cyclodextrin. MβCD can be used to enhance the enzyme activity and enantioselectivity of subtilizing enzyme in organic solvents.

Application

Methyl-β-cyclodextrin is a cholesterol-removing agent mainly used for lipid raft disruption. It may also be used for detergent removal from protein-lipid-detergent ternary mixture to produce 2D membrane protein crystals due to its high solubility and affinity for detergents generally used in membrane protein chemistry.
Methyl-β-cyclodextrin may be used as:
  • A buffer additive for the effective separation of aminophospholipids by modified micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) coupled with laser-induced fluorescence detection.
  • A mobile phase additive for the analysis of R,S-naproxen mixtures in commercial tablet formulations by conventional and nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC).
  • An analytical standard for the determination of the analyte in biological samples by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • A chiral selector for the resolution of repaglinide enantiomers in pharmaceutical formulations by capillary electrophoresis.

The aim of this study is to confirm the formation of inclusion complexes between miconazole (MCZ) and two derivatives of beta-cyclodextrin, methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MbetaCD) and 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPbetaCD) in aqueous solution by phase solubility studies.
