General description

Histidine decarboxylase (HDC) gene codes for acid L-histidine decarboxylase. HDC gene with 14 exons varying in size up to 24 kb is located on human chromosome 15q21–q22.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

Histidine decarboxylase (HDC) is the rate-limiting enzyme required for the synthesis of histamine. Polymorphisms in the HDC gene are linked with abnormal low age at natural menopause (AANM). Female infertility due to ovarian aging is linked to AANM. Obesity, smoking, alcohol usage, and breastfeeding are some of the lifestyle factors linked to AANM.
