Application

Pentobarbital sodium salt has been used as an anesthetic in rats[1] and mice[2][3] prior to various in vitro studies.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Pentobarbital (PB) is a barbiturate and a ligand of the γ-aminobutyric acid subtype A (GABAA) receptor.[4] It is a sedative anesthetic[5] majorly used in rodent euthanasia.[4] Pentobarbital possesses hypnotic functionality[4] and muscle relaxing properties.[5] It enhances GABAergic activity.[6] Intraperitoneal injection of PB may result in loss of righting reflex (LORR) and heartbeat cessation.[5]
