General description

Activated charcoal can be used for the following:
  • Fiber coating to compare solid-phase microextraction efficiency of the multiwalled carbon nanotubes in water and milk samples before GC-ECD analysis.[1]
  • It may be used to study its effect on tissue cultures of Daucus carota, Happlopapus gracilis and Allum cepa var. proliferum, to check the adsorption of metabolites inhibiting morphognesis.[2]
  • It may also be used in the plant tissue culture to increase the adsorption of auxin and cytokinin from the culture media.[3]
  • It may also be used as the primary gastrointestinal decontamination procedure after acute drug overdose.[4]
  • It may also be used for the adsorption of dyes namely malachite green, bromophenol blue, alizarine red-S, methylene blue, eriochrome black-T, phenol red, methyl blue, and methyl violet from aqueous media.[5]
  • Oral activated charcoal may be also used for adsorption of theophylline, hence can be effectively used in patients with theophylline poisoning.[6]
Activated charcoal or activated carbon is an adsorbent used to remove broad spectrum of pollutants in air, water and soil, and is non-toxic in nature.[7][8] It is odourless and tasteless and can be prepared from any carbonaceous material using gas or chemical activation methods. Gas activation is preferred when the raw material has less than 25% moisture content.[8]

  3. I would like to know the mesh of this activated carbon charcoal. Thanks a lot

    1 answer
    1. The particle size is not tested internally (and therefore, guaranteed), but the product's supplier sieves the product and claims that 35% or less (by mass) falls through a 40 micron sieve, meaning that at least 65% of the material is smaller than 40 micron. An average particle size is not tested or reported.

  4. What is the surface area of this activated carbon?

    1 answer
    1. The total surface area for this product is 1050-1150 m²/g.

  5. I would like to consult about activated charcoal. I want to buy activated carbon powder with a purity greater than 99% and a particle size below 400 mesh (38 microns). If your company offers a suitable product, please contact me.

    1 answer
    1. Unfortunately, there is no activated charcoal that is tested for purity greater than 99% offered. However, there are several products with a particle size smaller than 400 mesh (38 microns). Please see this link for all possible products: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/search/7440-44-0?focus=products&page=1&perpage=30&sort=relevance&term=7440-44-0&type=cas_number
