General description
R2A agar was devised by Reasoner and Geldreich for the isolation and cultivation of bacteria from treated potable water. The medium is suitable for this purpose as it is not nutrient-rich, and at lower temperatures and with longer incubation times it stimulates the growth of stress and chlorine-tolerant bacteria. These would normally be inhibited when cultured on nutrient-rich media by faster-growing microbes. The agar-based media comes in ready-to-use cassettes Each cassette is a plastic 3-piece assembly containing approximately 10ml of R2A Agar.
Application
R2A agar is used in heterotrophic plate count (HPC) testing. HPC, formerly known as the standard plate count, is a procedure for estimating the number of live bacteria in water and measuring changes during water treatment in distribution systems or in swimming pools.
