General description
Polyprenols or poly-isoprene-ols are primary monohydric alcohols containing 5 to 25 isoprene units in its carbon skeleton, with a hydroxyl group placed at the end. They are found in limited quantities in several plant tissues. Dolichol is an α-saturated polyisoprenoid alcohol with 13-21 isoprene units. Dolichol found in yeast and fungi, facilitate the synthesis of mannoproteins.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Polyprenols can be predominantly used as a natural bioregulators. Dolichol concentration in animal tissues increases with age. Therefore, it can be used as a potential biomarker of aging. Increased serum dolichol levels leads to the development of chronic cholestatic liver diseases.
