General description

Inhibitor-remover packings and ready-to-use, disposable prepacked columns conveniently remove small amounts of inhibitors which are added to reagents or solvents that would otherwise be unstable. R: 20-37 S: 22-38-36
• Useful in applications which require that the stabilizer or inhibitor (hydroquinone (HQ), hydro-quinone monomethyl ether (MEHQ, 4-methoxyphenol), or 4-tert-butylcatechol (TBC) be removed prior to use.
• Columns may be discarded1 when exhausted or reused by filling column approximately 3/4 full with new packing material. HQ/MEHQ columns refill vol.: ~21g. TBC column refill vol.:~30g.
• Approx. column capacity:
HQ/MEHQ: 3L at 100ppm
TBC: 4L at 15ppm
• TBC columns and packings are not recommended for use with polar solvents, including acrylic acid. Vacuum distillation is suggested for such applications.
Easy-to-use:
1.
Prewashing of prepacked glass columns with a small amount of monomer is recommended.
2. Add monomer (or solvent) to an addition funnel which is secured above column.
3. Add monomer dropwise to the column. Monitor rate of addition to prevent overflow of the column. Collect monomer in an appropriate container.
4. For low-melting solid monomers, keep temperature of column above the melting point during use.
Caution: Overheating may cause monomer to polymerize on the column. Viscous or high-melting monomers may be diluted in an appropriate solvent before addition to the column.
1Unused columns can be discarded with other solid chemical waste. After use, the toxicity and hazards of the monomer, from which the inhibitor is being removed, should be considered in deciding how to dispose of the packing material or column.

Application

Inhibitor remover is mainly used in the purification of methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) and the removal of hydroquinone, which can be used for the synthesis of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).[1][2] It can also be used to purify and remove the inhibitor in N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) and hydroxylethyl methacrylate (HEMA), that can be used to fabricate a low-cost absorbent for metal absorption.[3]

Questions

1–7 of 7 Questions
  1. Would these work for removal of Topanol A, 2,4-Dimethyl-6-tert-butylphenol CAS Number:1879-09-0?

    1 answer
    1. This product is not tested for removal of Topanol A, but is expected to be suitable. The product is used for inhibitor removal for product 276685. Methacrylic anhydride, which contains 2,000 ppm Topanol A as inhibitor.

      Helpful?

  2. Which side of the column is the top versus the bottom?

    1 answer
    1. The label is placed at the top of the column and will include the lot number. The column is provided with a cap on each end; these caps would need to be removed when the column is in use, but replaced between uses.

The glass wool plugs are present to hold the beads inside the column. Initially, a small volume of liquid will wet the glass wool. As more volume is added, the column will become saturated and then eventually pass through and out at the bottom of the column.

  4. What is the flow rate for Product 306312, Inhibitor removers - Prepacked column for removing hydroquinone and monomethyl ether hydroquinone?

    1 answer
    1. According to the manufacturer of this inhibitor removal column, the maximum recommended flow rate is 4 bed volumes (approximately 120 mL) per hour.

      Helpful?

  5. How much can Product 306312, Inhibitor removers - Prepacked column for removing hydroquinone and monomethyl ether hydroquinone, hold at one time?

    1 answer
    1. This product has a bed volume of approximately 30 mL.

      Helpful?

  6. Can Product 306312, Inhibitor removers - Prepacked column for removing hydroquinone and monomethyl ether hydroquinone, be used more than once?

    1 answer
    1. This pre-packed inhibitor remover column is meant for single use but can be rinsed and reused. If time will pass between uses, this column can be rinsed with methanol, dried, capped on both ends, and stored in a tightly sealed plastic bag in the freezer at -20°C.

      Helpful?

  7. Can Product 306312, Inhibitor removers - Prepacked column for removing hydroquinone and monomethyl ether hydroquinone, be used to remove butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)?

    1 answer
    1. This inhibitor remover is not intended to remove BHT present in a monomer solution; little, if any, BHT will be removed with this column. Unfortunately, Sigma-Aldrich does not currently offer a inhibitor-remover column that will accomplish this purpose.
