Such proteins may release beneficial fatty acids and bind those that are inhibitory. Linoleic acid, a precursor of prostaglandins bound to BSA is beneficial to the growth of a variety of cell types (e.g., BHK, hybridoma). It also improves its stability and solubility in culture media.
