Gene Information

human ... ACOT13(55856)

General description

Acyl-CoA thioesterase 13 (ACOT13), also known as thioesterase superfamily member 2 (THEM-2), is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 6p22.3. The encoded protein has a molecular mass of ∼15kDa with 140 amino acids. It is a member of the hotdog-domain thioesterase family. THEM2 is highly expressed in several tissues such as heart, kidney, liver and brown adipose tissue (BAT). It has been shown to be co-localized with β-tubulin on microtubules. At least two isoforms of THEM2 are known to exist.

Immunogen

THEM2 antibody was raised against a 17 amino acid peptide near the carboxy terminus of human THEM2.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Acyl-CoA thioesterase 13 (ACOT13)/thioesterase superfamily member 2 (THEM-2) possesses thioesterase activity, with greater activity observed with longer chain acyl-CoAs such as myristoyl- and palmitoyl-CoA. THEM2 associates with StarD, a protein that plays a key role in fatty acid metabolism, and the addition of StarD to THEM2 increased its catalytic activity, suggesting that THEM2 plays a significant role in the metabolism of fatty acids.
