Cell Line Origin

Fish epithelioma Fathead minnow Pimephales promelas

Cell Line Description

This cell line known as Epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) was originally reported to be from Carp (Cyprinus carpio) epidermal herpes virus-induced hyperplastic lesions. More recently EPC was found to be derived from Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas) see Winton et al., 2010. This has been confirmed by DNA sequencing at ECACC. The cells support the growth of pancreatic necrosis virus and rhabdovirus.

DNA Profile

Culture Medium

EMEM (EBSS) + 2 mM Glutamine + 1% Non Essential Amino Acids (NEAA) + 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS).

Subculture Routine

Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:3 using 0.25% trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 20 °C. Fish cell lines detach easily during transit if the culture is too young. After resuscitation split cells 1:3 and culture for at least one week with 1-2 media changes before shipping.
