General description

Paraplast® is a paraffin–polyisobutylene mixture for tissue embedding and infiltration. It is a refined combination of highly purified paraffin-containing plastic polymers of regulated molecular weights. It produces minimal tissue compression and wrinkle-free sections and cuts to 4 μm thickness with excellent ribbon continuity.
Paraplast® tissue embedding media are made from highly purified wax combined with plastic polymers for tensile strength and elasticity. Paraplast provides rapid infiltration during processing as well as great compression resistance during sectioning for preserved morphology and thin, distortion-free sections.
Our range of Paraplast products improve the elasticity of brittle, difficult-to-cut tissues making it easier to produce excellent, wrinkle-free sections.

Application

Paraplast® has been used for tissue embedding and in the following applications:
  • to screen major groups of vertebrates for the presence of cardiac smooth muscle and its phylogenetic distribution in terrestrial and aquatic turtles[1]
  • to study the relationship between membrane impedance and dendrite length of hippocampal neurons[2]
  • to compare the regenerative properties of human stem cells of the apical papilla as an alternative to other dental stem cells[3]

Features and Benefits

  • Produces minimal tissue compression and wrinkle-free sections, and cuts to 4 μm thickness with excellent ribbon continuity.
  • Higher melt viscosity and lower permeability to water vapor creates better adhesion and a more pliable, flexible film.
  • Optimal infiltration and embedding for high-quality sections.
  • Great compression resistance and ribbon continuity.
  • Remarkable morphology preservation and distortion-free sections.

Other Notes

Double filtered paraffin wax in pellet form.

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. 成分(配合率)を教えてください。

    1 answer
    1. The composition of this product is considered proprietary. Leica Biosystems reports that Paraplast is a 'refined mixture of highly purified paraffin-containing plastic polymers of regulated molecular weights'.

      Helpful?

  2. Is it suitable to use it to cut tissues with implants that have been embedded in Paraplast, Paraplast Xtra, or Paraplast Plus?

    1 answer
    1. Paraplast is commonly used to cut soft tissue to 4 or 5 microns, while Paraplast Xtra can cut down to 2 microns. Paraplast Plus is capable of cutting down to 1 micron, provided the user is skilled; otherwise, slightly thicker sections can be obtained.

      Helpful?

  3. At what temeperature or temperaturintervall the Paraplast is melting?

    1 answer
    1. The Melting point/range is 56-57°C (133-135°F)
