Can clear finger nail polish be used to replace Polyvinyl alcohol mounting medium with DABCO®, Product 10981, to seal the edges of the coverslips?
1 answer-
Anecdotal evidence suggests that permanent mounting medias do a better job of stopping evaporation of the aqueous mounting media. Clear finger nail polish has been used by some labs for sealing the edges of the coverslip. We are unaware of any formal studies which have been performed that would document which product gives the better performance.

Is it necessary to seal the slides after coverslipping?
1 answer-
No. The slides do not require sealing after coverslipping. However sealing the edges of the coverslip with a permanent mounting media such as DPX will prevent the gradual formation of air bubbles as the aqueous mounting media gradually dries.

How does the use of aqueous Polyvinyl alcohol mounting medium with DABCO®, Product 10981, with an anti-fade agent differ from the use of a standard aqueous mounting media?
1 answer-
The anti-fade agent used in product 10981 will result in an initial drop in the intensity of the fluorescence. Once the drop in fluorescence has occurred, the remaining fluorescence is not prone to rapid photo bleaching.
