Application

Alkane standard solution C8-C20 has been used as standard in the measurement of retention indices for the identification of alkanes co-existing in essential oils using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.
Alkane standard solution C8-C20 may also be used as an analytical standard for measurement of linear retention indices (LRI) in the identification of volatile components in honey samples using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Other Notes

contains C8, C9, C10, C11, C12, C13, C14, C15, C16, C17, C18, C19, C20; ~40 mg/l each, in hexane

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. I cant see a list of the CAS numbers for the added alkanes. Do you have it?

    1 answer
    1. This standard mixture contains octane (CAS No. 111-65-9), nonane (CAS No. 111-84-2), decane (CAS No. 124-18-5), undecane (CAS No. 1120-21-4), dodecane (CAS No. 112-40-3), tridecane (CAS No. 629-50-5), tetradecane (CAS No. 629-59-4), pentadecane (CAS No. 629-62-9), hexadecane (CAS No. 544-76-3), heptadecane (CAS No. 629-78-7), octadecane (CAS No. 593-45-3), nonadecane (CAS No. 629-92-5), and icosane (CAS No. 112-95-8).

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. Are these all n-alkanes? So for example, is the C8 only octane or is it a mixture of isomers? 2-methylheptane, 3-methylheptane, etc. Thank you!

    1 answer
    1. This product contains ~40 mg/l of each C8, C9, C10, C11, C12, C13, C14, C15, C16, C17, C18, C19 and C20 in hexane.
