General description

Peroxynitrite (ONOO−) is a powerful oxidant formed by the collision of nitric oxide and superoxide.[1]

Application

Peroxynitrite has been used to induce pericyte contraction in mouse brains.[1] It has also been used for the preparation of positive control nitrated protein standards in immunohistochemical studies.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Peroxynitrite (ONOO−) exhibits bactericidal activity.[3] It promotes cell death and contributes to the signal-transduction process, mitochondrial function, and apoptotic pathway. The formation of peroxynitrite has been associated with the development of various diseases including vascular diseases, ischemia-reperfusion injury, circulatory shock, inflammation, pain, and neurodegeneration.[1]

Peroxynitrite is a strong oxidant formed by macrophages and potentially by other cells that produce nitric oxide and superoxide. Peroxynitrite was highly bactericidal, killing Escherichia coli in direct proportion to its concentration with an LD50 of 250 microM at 37
