General description

Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal antibiotic which has a high affinity for sterols, especially ergosterols, of both fungal and bacterial cell membranes. Amphotericin B water soluble is a synthetic derivative of AmB that preserves the antifungal activity but is highly miscible in water up to 100 mg/mL.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mode of Action: Amphotericin B binds to sterols, forming pores in the membrane, and causing small molecules to leak out. Antimicrobial spectrum: Includes fungi and yeast It has a high affinity for sterols, especially ergosterols, of both fungal and bacterial cell membranes. It forms transmembrane channels by binding to sterols associated with membranes, thereby leading to the leakage of small molecules Amphotericin B elicits toxicity despite being an effective antibiotic for treating mycoses Normal usage in maintenance of antifungal cell cultures is 2.5 mg/L with penicillin and streptomycin used in the medium. Amphotericin B is most effective against fungi and yeast.
