Caldesmon is a widely distributed protein in smooth muscle and non-smooth muscle cells to regulate cell contraction. High-molecular-weight caldesmon (isoforms-1 or h-CD or h-caldesmon) is predominantly expressed in smooth muscles and smooth muscle tumors of the soft tissue, but not in myofibroblasts. In contrast, low-molecular-weight caldesmon (isoforms 2, 3, 4 and 5) are widely distributed in non-muscle tissues and cells such as fibroblasts.
