General description

Miller′s LB is a highly-referenced microbial growth medium used for the cultivation of E. coli. This nutrient-rich microbial broth contains peptides, amino acids, water-soluble vitamins, and carbohydrates in a low-salt formulation. The addition of agar provides a solid medium for microbial growth.

Application

Suitable for selective cultivation of E. coli strains that contain plasmids conferring kanamycin resistance. The bacteria can be used for DNA plasmid production or production of recombinant proteins. LB Agar Kanamycin-50, Plates has been used in the screening of Agrobacterium tumefaciens[1] and E.coli JM83 strain with pGD103 plasmid.[2]

  2. Why do the LB-agar plates with antibiotics have such a short expiration date?

    1 answer
    1. The antibiotics in the LB-agar plates are not stable.  The antibiotic degrades over time, making it ineffective at selecting transformed bacteria grown on the plate.  Because of this, we recommend the plates are used as soon as possible once they are received.  For labs with low use, the plates may expire quickly, so they may benefit from pouring their own plates using the LB - Miller powder with agar formulation (L3147).
