Gene Information

human ... CD28(940)

General description

Cluster of differentiation 28 (CD 28) is a lymphocyte surface protein. In human chromosome, the gene CD28 is localized on 2q33.2. The antibody CD28.2 reacts with CD28, a disulfide-linked homodimeric type I glycoprotein (monomer of Mw 44 kDa) which is a critical costimulatory receptor of T cells. HLDA V.; WS Code 5T CD28.05.

Immunogen

DC28.1.3.3 murine T cell hybridoma transfected with human CD28 cDNA

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cluster of differentiation 28 (CD28) acts as a costimulatory molecule for T cell activation and proliferation. CD28 might function as a tumor suppressor gene and the polymorphism is related to increased risk of breast cancer. CD28 plays a key role in allogenic responses. The level of CD28 is upregulated in CD4+ lymphocytes during acute graft rejection. Polymorphism in CD28 owing to higher frequency of CD28 molecule has impact on schizophrenia. Mutations in CD28 is associated with T cell lymphoma′s and neoplasm, leading to accelerated tumour growth. CD28 along with phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K) regulates diverse biochemical pathways. CD28 signals to T cells and prevents anergy and apoptosis and promotes T cell proliferation and production of interleukin-2.
