General description

Ezrin is a 80kDa membrane-associated protein that belongs to ERM (Ezrin/Radixin/Moesin) family. Ezrin is found predominantly in polarized epithelial cells such as intestinal epithelial cells, gastric parietal cells, epithelial cells of the kidney proximal tubule, terminal bronchiole of the lung, and in mesothelia.

Immunogen

synthetic peptide corresponding to amino acids 479-498 of human ezrin with N-terminal added cysteine, conjugated to KLH. The corresponding sequence in rat and mouse differs by three amino acids.

Application

Anti-Ezrin antibody produced in rabbit has been used in:
  • immunolocalization studies
  • immunostaining
  • immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry
  • immunoblot

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cultured neuronal cells do express ezrin to some extent, and whole brain tissue expresses low levels of ezrin. Ezrin expression is associated with malignancy in astrocytoma, osteosarcoma, mammary and pancreatic adenocarcinomas, and in cutaneous and uveal melanomas.
Ezrin promotes cell adhesion. The NH2-terminal domain negatively regulates membrane spreading and elongation properties of ezrin COOH-terminal domain. The members of ERM family are usually involved in cross-linking of plasma membrane and actin filaments. ERM proteins are involved in cell adhesion, cell shape determination, migration, and the organization of cell surface structures. They are also involved in signal transduction and apoptosis. Ezrin has been implicated in tumor progression and metastatic spread.

Physical form

Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline containing 15 mM sodium azide.
