Profenofos is a non-systemic insecticide and acaricide that belongs to the group of organophosphates. It is an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor causing hyperexcitation and impedes the functioning of the nervous system. Profenofos is used for protection against insects, particularly Lepidoptera, and mites in cotton, maize, sugar beets, soybeans, potatoes, vegetables, tobacco, and other crops.

According to the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 2076/2002 of 20th November 2002, profenofos is not approved for use in the European Union (EU) as a plant protection agent, following Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009. But maximum residue levels of 0.01 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg are allowed for the presence of profenofos in products of plant and animal origin, according to the EU Reg. No 2017/978.
Profenofos has to be monitored in the Multiannual Control Programme for Pesticides Residues (MACP), run within the EU and EFTA in/on products of plant origin.

Application

The certified reference material (CRM) is intended to be used as a calibrant for chromatography and other analytical techniques.
Profenofos CRM may also be used as given below:

  • Evaluation of Fourier transform-NIR (FT-NIR) and Fourier transform-MIR (FT-MIR) spectroscopy techniques for the detection of profenofos in Chinese kale, cabbage, and chili spur pepper samples
  • Multi-residue analysis of pesticides in 150 egg samples comprising duck, goose, and quail eggs by a modified QuEChERS method for extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for quantification
  • Detection of insecticides from three different classes in peach samples by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique, based on silver-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs)
  • Multi-residue analysis of 160 multiclass pesticides using ethyl acetate (EtAC)/n. hexane mixture for extraction from chamomile, thyme, and marjoram samples and their analysis by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS)
  • Simultaneous determination of 18 chiral pesticides in solid and liquid environmental samples by magnetic amino-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (m-MWCNTs-NH2) based extraction prior to an enantioselective liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) analysis
  • Method development and validation for the determination of 36 multi-class pesticides in soil samples by liquid chromatography with tandem quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry (MS-MS/MS) following a modified QuEChERS-based extraction
