Mercury (Hg) is considered an extremely toxic heavy metal which is extremely harmful to human health. Researchers are investigating the role of Hg2+-induced oxidative stress, via peroxynitrite (ONOO−) level upregulation, in the pathogenic mechanisms of mercury toxicity. BioTracker NIR-HO Live Cell Dye is a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe for the detection and visualization of Hg2+-induced ONOO− generation in vitro and in vivo. This fluorescent probe was designed with a “dual-key-and-lock” strategy where emission can only be switched on in the presence of both Hg2+ and ONOO− (1). It provides an effective method for detecting and imaging Hg2+ and ONOO- in oxidative stress studies and in the development of detoxifying drugs.
