General description

A certified solution standard for use in LC/MS or GC/MS benzodiazepine testing methods in clinical toxicology, urine drug testing, or forensic analysis. Etizolam, sold under brand names such as Etilaam, Etizola, or Depas, is a benzodiazepine analog used for the short-term treatment of insomnia, anxiety, or panic attacks. Etizolam is also sold on the designer drug market with cases of abuse noted in Europe and the US.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Etizolam is a thienodiazepine anxiolytic and as compared to other benzodiazepines has lower dependence potential. It differs from other benzodiazepines in that its molecules possess a thiophene ring instead of benzene. It has anticonvulsant, sedative, anxiolytic, amnesic, hypnotic and muscle relaxant properties. It′s mode of action is through benzodiazepine receptor. It is used to treat insomnia, moderate depression and social anxiety disorder, and has occasionally been associated with blepharospasm and skin lesions.[1][2]

Etizolam is an anxiolytic drug with a pharmacologic profile similar to that of the classic benzodiazepines. Neurochemical research suggests that etizolam may have selectivity for the subpopulation of Y-aminobutyric acid type A receptors associated with anxiety (ie, alpha1, beta2, gamma2).
