General description

Magnolol is a bioactive neolignan extracted from the root and stem bark of different Chinese herbal Magnolia trees. It has a hydroxylated bi-phenoid structure like that of its structural isomer honokiol. It is a lipophilic compound.

Application

Magnolol has been used:
  • to test its effect on muscle atrophy and macrophage subtypes in sarcopenia mouse model
  • to test its inhibitory effect on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in angiogenesis assay
  • to test its anti-fungal effects on growth, ultrastructure, and biofilm formation of Candida spp. strains
  • in the preparation of immobilized amino-functionalized mesoporous silica particles for prolonged-release studies

Biochem/physiol Actions

Magnolol exerts anti-depressant and, neurodegenerative properties. It is also considered to be a potent anti-cancer agent for its involvement in reducing cell proliferation, cell cytotoxicity, and inducing apoptosis.
Magnolol is a bioactive plant component isolated from the root and stem bark of Magnolia officinalis with antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant effects. Magnolol also demonstrates anti-inflammatory activity by interferring with NF-κB signaling. It also appears to have anti-inflammatory properties related to vascular disorders such as atherosclerosis due to its ability to inhibit IL-6-induced STAT3 activation.
