General description

Complement component C3 is an integral part of the classical, lectin, and alternative complement pathways, and its cleavage products are involved in immune responses such as opsonization and cell lysis. C3d is a fragment of C3 that normally binds to pathogen surfaces to promote B-cell activation. However, deposition of C3d has also been observed in peritubular capillaries of transplanted kidneys undergoing acute allograft rejection.

C4d deposition in peritubular capillaries (PTCs) is a sign of humoral renal allograft rejection and an independent predictor of graft survival. Few investigators have focused on the meaning of capillary C3 deposition in rejecting grafts. Because C3 production can result

Acute humoral rejection (AHR), which occurs in up to 8% of kidney transplant recipients, is a significant cause of renal allograft dysfunction and loss. More efficacious treatment modalities are needed to eliminate or curtail alloantibody production and its deleterious effects

Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) testing is an important procedure in the diagnosis of autoimmune bullous dermatoses. We investigated the expression of C3d in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue of autoimmune bullous dermatoses. The immunohistochemical expression of C3d in bullous pemphigoid (BP) (n =

Among patients with early severe impairment of renal allograft function we have previously identified a group displaying isolated deposition of complement factor C3 in glomeruli. Here we studied the pattern of complement deposition more extensively in allograft biopsies from five
