General description

Methyl cellulose is a water-soluble, non-ionic polymer with hydrophilic glucosidic bonds, derived from the polysaccharide cellulose.

Application

Methyl cellulose has been used:
  • in colony forming assays
  • for sperm motility assessment
  • for the generation of spheroids
  • in preparation of agar beads

Biochem/physiol Actions

Methyl cellulose mediates stabilization of oil, water and air mixtures, like foam, by emulsification. Methyl cellulose is used as a binder and thickener for various adhesives. It is also used as a treatment of constipation.
