General description

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) carries a positively charged quaternary amine and a negatively charged phosphate in its headgroup. It is an important component of mammalian membranes.
The list of Phosphatidylcholine products offered by Avanti is designed to provide compounds having a variety of physical properties. Products available include short chain (C3-C8 are water soluble and hygroscopic), saturated, multi-unsaturated and mixed acid PC′s. All of the products are purified by HPLC, and special precautions are taken to protect the products for oxidization and hydrolysis.

Application

15:0 PC (1,2-dipentadecanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) may be used:
  • as a component in fluidizing lipid bilayers to study the role of membrane fluidity in mediating membrane sensitivity to small hydrophobic peptides or haptoglobin-related protein (SHP-1)
  • to prepare giant unilamellar lipid vesicles (GUVs)
  • to construct supported phospholipid bilayers to study the gel-fluid phase transition behavior using in situ, temperature-dependent atomic force microscopy

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is capable of preventing the penetrance of bacteria by acting as a surfactant. This phospholipid is capable of forming a strong bilayer.

We utilize in situ, temperature-dependent atomic force microscopy to examine the gel-fluid phase transition behavior in supported phospholipid bilayers constructed from 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, 1,2-dipentadecanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine. The primary gel-fluid phase transition at T(m) occurs through development of anisotropic cracks in the
