Gene Information

human ... FASN(2194)

General description

FASN (fatty acid synthase) encodes a fatty acid synthase (FAS) enzyme. This gene is located on human chromosome 17.
The enzyme encoded by this gene is a multifunctional protein. Its main function is to catalyze the synthesis of palmitate from acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA, in the presence of NADPH, into long-chain saturated fatty acids. In some cancer cell lines, this protein has been found to be fused with estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-alpha), in which the N-terminus of FAS is fused in-frame with the C-terminus of ER-alpha. (provided by RefSeq)

Immunogen

FASN (AAH07909, 1 a.a. ~ 439 a.a) full-length recombinant protein with GST tag. MW of the GST tag alone is 26 KDa.

Biochem/physiol Actions

FASN (fatty acid synthase) is essential for de novo fatty-acid synthesis. It plays a major role in glioma neovascularization. The product of this gene helps in the production of fatty acids from acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA. Absence of FASN may block migration, invasion and healing of hepatoma carcinoma cells by reducing HIF-1α (hypoxia-inducible factor 1-α) and IGFBP1 (insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1).

Statins are a class of drug widely prescribed for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, with pleiotropic cellular effects. Statins inhibit HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), which converts the metabolite HMG-CoA into mevalonate. Recent discoveries have shown HMG-CoA is a reactive metabolite that
