Gene Information

human ... ORAI1(84876)
mouse ... Orai1(109305)

General description

ORAI calcium release-activated calcium modulator 1 (ORAI1) is the pore-forming subunit of the Ca2+ release-activated (CRAC) channel. The protein possesses four predicted transmembrane domains and intracellular amino and carboxyl-terminal domains. The ORAI1 gene is localized on human chromosome 12q24.31.

Immunogen

synthetic peptide corresponding to amino acids 288-301 of human ORAI1, conjugated to KLH. The corresponding sequence differs by 2 amino acids in rat and mouse.

Application

Anti-ORAI1 antibody produced in rabbit has been used in immunohistochemistry and Western blotting.

Biochem/physiol Actions

ORAI calcium release-activated calcium modulator 1 (ORAI1) modulates Ca2+ entry into cells. The channel is activated by stromal interaction molecule-1 (STIM-1). Mutation in the gene encoding the protein has been linked to late-onset tubular aggregate myopathy and congenital miosis.

Physical form

Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide.

In eukaryotic cells, calcium entry across the cell surface activates nuclear gene expression, a process critically important for cell growth and differentiation, learning, and memory and immune cell functions.
