It is commonly used as a catalyst in chemical reactions such as the oxidation of hydrocarbons and the reduction of nitrogen oxides. In the field of energy storage, cobalt (II) oxide nanopowder is used in the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors due to its high capacitance, fast charge-discharge characteristics, and excellent cycling stability. In addition, it is also used in the development of magnetic materials, including magnetic nanoparticles, and as a precursor for the synthesis of cobalt-based cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
