Gene Information

human ... OVOL1(5017)

General description

Anti-OVOL1 antibody detects endogenous levels of total OVOL1 protein.
The OVOL1 (ovo like transcriptional repressor 1) gene is mapped to human chromosome 11q13.1. It is widely conserved. In mammals, the gene encodes for C2H2 zinc finger transcription factor. It is predominantly expressed in the human placenta and in the inner root sheath of the hair follicle, suprabasal layer of the epidermis, the ductal portion of the eccrine glands and mature sebocytes of the skin.{36] The protein is localized to cytoplasm.

Immunogen

The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human OVOL1.

Immunogen Range: 1-50

Biochem/physiol Actions

The protein encoded by the OVOL1 (ovo like transcriptional repressor 1) gene regulates proliferation and differentiation of epithelial cells. This protein is homologous to that in Drosophila species, which regulates trophoblast differentiation. OVOL1 is known to take part in epidermal keratinisation by inducing differentiation. OVOL1 is associated with atopic dermatitis. OVOL1 is associated with skin morphogenesis and tumorigenesis.

OVOL1 is an important transcription factor for epidermal keratinization, which suppresses proliferation and switches on the differentiation of keratinocytes. A recent genome-wide association study has revealed that OVOL1 is one of the genes associated with susceptibility to atopic dermatitis. Although
