General description
Montmorillonite is a layered clay mineral (2:1 phyllosilicate) that belongs to a class of the smectite group. It is a naturally abundant material and is chemically modified by the cation-exchange method for the preparation of polymer nanocomposites.
Application
Montmorillonite has been used as:
It can also be used:
- A nanofiller to improve the mechanical properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film for potential usage in packaging applications.
- A catalyst in the conversion of polar and non-polar algae oil lipids to biodiesel.
It can also be used:
- As a nanofiller in the preparation of biopolymer based nanocomposites.
- In the preparation of Fe3+-montmorillonite, a solid acid catalyst for the synthesis of xanthenedione derivatives.
