General description

Molybdenum(V)chloride is a Lewis acid widely used as a catalyst and reagent in many organicreactions. It can be prepared by direct chlorination of molybdenum metal or byrefluxing thionyl chloride and MoO3.

Application

Molybdenum(V) chloride can be used as an efficient catalyst for:
  • Condensation of nitrobenzene with alcohols and C-C coupling of alkenyllithium reagents.
  • Direct amidation of benzylic alcohols with sulfonamides and carbamates.
It can be used for the chlorination of alkyl halides, alkenes, and alkynes.

It can also be used as aprecursor to synthesize alumina/molybdenum nanocomposites and methylenemolybdenumreagents for chemoselective carbonyl alkenation.
