General description

Silver nitrate along with Iodine are among several inorganic substances used to induce color in microscopical preparations. Silver nitrate as a biological stain exploits the strong colors of colloidal metallic silver. Silver nitrate is an important component of the silver staining that is used for the detection of proteins separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Application

Silver nitrate is a component of the Silver stain kit. It is required for image development in diamine as well as non-diamine silver staining.

Biochem/physiol Actions

In silver staining, silver ions are reduced to metallic silver, thereby giving metallic silver images.
