General description

Sodium periodate (sodium (meta)periodate) supported on silica gel is a solid supported reagent. It may be synthesized by adding silica gel to hot aqueous solution of sodium metaperiodate and evaporating to dryness followed by vigorous swirling and shaking.

Application

Sodium periodate (sodium (meta)periodate) supported on silica gel may be used in the following reactions:
  • Oxidative cleavage of glycols to alkenes and 1,2-diols to aldehydes.
  • Phthalimide N-oxyl (PINO) radical generation from N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI).
  • Selective oxidation of sulfides by microwave thermolysis process.
  • Regeneration of ketones from ketoximes by microwave irradiation under solvent-free conditions.
  • Preparation of 2,3-O-isopropylidene-D-glyceraldehyde.
