Phenol red is typically used as a pH indicator for neutral solutions. The solubility of this product is tested at 100 mg/mL in 1 N Sodium Hydroxide. The material has not been tested for solubility in acids. A 20 mM solution of Acetic acid is expected to have a pH of approximately 3.5. At a pH of 6.8 or less phenol red in solution is yellow. The visual transition interval of this indicator is 6.8 - 8.2, with anything higher than 8.2 being deep red in color.
