General description
C12-NBD Galactosyl Ceramide is a fluorescent derivative of biologically active compound galactosyl ceramide. NBD (2-(4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-7-yl) aminoethyl) is a fluorophore. Galactosyl ceramide (Galactocerebroside) is a glycosphingolipid that is synthesized in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum.
Application
C12-NBD Galactosyl Ceramide may be used as a substrate in biochemical characterization of ceramidase analogue expressed in Aspergillus oryzae.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Galactosyl Ceramide is a precursor of 3′-sulfo-galactosylceramide which is a major sulfoglycolipid present in the brain and other organ systems. It is also a necessary component in differentiation of oligodendrocytes. The abnormal accumulation of galactosyl ceramide is associated with Fabry′s disease and Krabbe′s disease.

Lysosomal lipid storage diseases, or lipidoses, are inherited metabolic disorders in which typically lipids accumulate in cells and tissues. Complex lipids, such as glycosphingolipids, are constitutively degraded within the endolysosomal system by soluble hydrolytic enzymes with the help of lipid

Sphingolipids (SP) are a complex class of molecules found in essentially all eukaryotes and some prokaryotes and viruses where they influence membrane structure, intracellular signaling, and interactions with the extracellular environment. Because of the combinatorial nature of their biosynthesis, there
