Application

Sodium hydride (dry) (NaH) can be used for a variety of applications such as:
  • preparation of sodium aluminum hydride (NaAlH4), which can be used as a hydrogen storage material[1]
  • a base and a reducing agent for the deprotonation of alcohols, phenols, amides, ketones, and different functional groups[2]
  • a hydride donor that can be used in various reactions such as nitriles, amides, and imines[3]
  • for potential usage in thermal energy storage[4]

Direct intercalation into C60 results in the superconducting material (NaH)4C60.

Questions

1–9 of 9 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.
For more information, please refer to the Product Dating Information document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/449/386/product-dating-information-mk.pdf

  5. The website states Product 223441, Sodium Hydride, is packaged in a metal can, can you give me more details on the container type?

    1 answer
    1. The Sodium Hydride will have been packaged under a Nitrogen atmosphere.  The material will be a plastic bag and  sealed inside of a metal can (paint can where you can pop the lid off).  On the top of the can, there will be a plastic ring sealing the lid.  This ring will need to be removed in order to open the can.

  7. What impurities are present in the Product 223441, Sodium Hydride?

    1 answer
    1. We have not performed impurity profiling on this product and therefore can not provide an impurity profile.  Impurities may include unreacted starting materials, residual solvents, reaction byproducts, etc.

      Helpful?

  8. Besides water, are there other materials that Product 223441, Sodium Hydride. will react hazardously with?

    1 answer
    1. Yes, per the Hazardous Laboratory Chemicals Disposal Guide, 2nd Edition, the following should also be avoided:Acetylene reacts vigorously in the presence of moisture even at -60oC. Air - the finely divided dry powder ignites in dry air. Halogens incandesces in Chlorine or Fluorine at room temperature and in Iodine at 100o C. Sulfur Dioxide -  reacts explosively with Sulfur Dioxide. Addition to water even in small amounts will result in explosion.

      Helpful?

  9. If Product 223441, Sodium Hydride, should start on fire, what is the best way to extinguish the fire?

    1 answer
    1. Use only a Metal-X (Class D) type extinguisher to extinguish the fire.Do not use water, carbon dioxide, or halocarbon extinguishers.
